Elevations in the park vary from sea level to over 2,000 feet. The climate ranges from foggy and damp near the ocean to sunny, warm ridge tops. The forest here is lush and mossy, crisscrossed by 32 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails. Location - Directions: The park is located on Highway 35, just 2 1/2 miles southeast of the junction with Highway 9.
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park With 15 miles of hiking and riding trails the Redwood Forest of this park looks much the same as it did 200 years ago. The main park area, containing the large, old-growth redwoods, is about 1,750 acres, and the northern area (Fall Creek) is 2,390 acres, with about 20 miles of hiking trails. Surfers, tourists, birds - including the rare Black Swift and wintering Monarch butterflies are drawn to this area. Sea lions populate the offshore rocks. The lighthouse is home to California's first surfing museum and is the location each Christmas for "Caroling Under the Stars," a Santa Cruz tradition which attracts hundreds of locals and visitors. Location - Directions: The beach is on West Cliff Drive in downtown Santa Cruz.
Manresa State Beach Manresa State Beach features a beautiful expanse of sea and sand, with surf fishing, surfing, and recreation. Location - Directions: From Highway 1, south of Aptos, San Andreas Road heads southwest and continues for several miles to Manresa, the first beach access upon reaching the coast.

Low tides and tidepools further along the beach reveal sea stars, crabs, sea anemones, and other colorful ocean life. The park also includes a large area of coastal scrub meadows, with bright native wildflowers in the spring. Location - Directions: Take Swift Avenue west from Highway 1, or follow West Cliff Drive north along the in-town bluffs until it ends at Natural Bridges.
New Brighton State Beach The New Brighton beach features picnic areas, swimming, fishing and a nearby forest of Monterey pine and Coastal Live Oak. Forrest of Niscene Marks State Park Once the site of logging operations in the early 1900s, there is still evidence of logging operations, mill sites and trestles in the park's 10,000 acres of rugged semi-wilderness. With over 30 miles of trails the park has trails for hiking, jogging and biking. Picnic tables and barbecue pits are available. Location - Directions: The park is four miles north of Aptos on Aptos Creek Road.
Twin Lakes State Beach Twin Lakes beach has a mile of sandy shoreline, popular for swimming and picnicking, and the park's adjacent Schwan's lake is a good location for bird watching. Several restored buildings once belonging to the Wilder family are preserved. The park has tours and living history demonstrations to help visitors explore the history of early ranchers and farmers along the Central Coast. Surrounding grounds include Victorian homes, gardens, and historic adobe. Additional shopping centers with a number of major chain stores such as Safe Way, Longs Drugs, K-mart, and Wallgreens are just a few minutes away in Scotts Valley on Mount Hermon Road. There is also a Costco in Santa Cruz at 220 Sylvania Avenue near the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 1, and a very popular shopping spot is the Capitola Mall, located on 41st Avenue just off Highway 1 at Capitola Road in Capitola. The mall itself has four major department stores, Macy's, Gottschalks, Mervyn's and Sears, and over 100 specialty shops and restaurants and there are additional small shopping centers and stores around the mall.
For shopping diversity and truly unique, one-of-a-kind items of character and personality there are two highly recommended shopping spots... Pacific Garden Mall and Capitola Village.
Pacific Garden Mall Located on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz the Pacific Garden Mall can be described as a open air mall with great outdoor shopping and dining. It has something for everyone. Featuring an eclectic collection of shops, galleries, boutiques, book shops, restaurants and more, the open air mall extends for several blocks with wide, tree lined sidewalks.
