An Elegant B&B in Santa Cruz
Reviewed in Voyager International, November/December 1994
|
The Felton Crest Inn is one of those B&B's where privacy and elegance go hand-in-hand. It's near Santa Cruz, between San Francisco and Monterey, and is very close to the Henry Cowell Redwoods State park, a pristine and beautiful reserve. Owner/manager Hanna Peters, originally from Hamburg Germany, enthusiastically greeted us as we arrived and commended us to enjoy the champagne and a bowl of fruit awaiting our pleasure in the room. Our room, the Tree Top Penthouse, was superb, as good or better than what you find in a luxury hotel. It has a glorious king-sized bed, fireplace, Jacuzzi, big screen projection |

television and VCR/Laser Disc Player with 45 laser disc movies on hand. Add to this the vaulted ceiling, the French doors that open onto a private deck, the surrounding redwood trees and it's no small wonder that this is a popular romantic hideaway. There are two other rooms. The Redwood Room is smaller with only a queen-sized bed, but does have a lovely view, and the Chalet Suite with a living room, large bedroom with a king-sized bed, and Jacuzzi, but it lacks great views. Breakfasts are bountiful and Ms. Peters is happy to guide you on your way to explore the area. |

Chamber Business of the Week - The Inn at Felton Crest Scotts Valley Banner & Valley Press, May 2002

If you want an escape from everyday pressures take a vacation without a plane flight, try the Inn at Felton Crest. This beautiful Bed & Breakfast is located in the Mountains of Felton, but feels as if you have left the world behind. Hanna Peters welcomes guests from Texas, New York, Tahiti, Finland, Germany, Austria and Asia as well as guests from all over Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties. Each person who visits is treated as if they are a long lost friend. Visitors from Philadelphia wrote in her guest book "The moment we met you we both felt we had stumbled on an old friend, a kindred spirit!" The Inn has also had a share of famous guests. Lindsay Wagner and Peggy Fleming have both stayed. Peggy Fleming even used the Inn at Felton Crest for a photo shoot. Hanna had a long and interesting journey from her homeland of Germany to become a luxury innkeeper. Hanna was born to a working class family in Germany. She had great difficulty learning English in school and was told to give it up and go play with her dolls. But she didn't let that stop her. Instead, Hanna worked hard and in 1967 she traveled to Rochester, New York to work as a nanny. By the time her year contract expired, Hanna had fallen in love and gotten married. The marriage lasted 16 years and brought Hanna to her beautiful house in Felton. After the divorce, Hanna realized she had to return to the working world. She started a house cleaning business. "My hands paid for my house," she says. Two girlfriends walking in Capitola inspired her to turn her house into a B&B. Laura Jones from Chateau de Fleur in Capitola as well as the owner of the Depot mentored and guided her through the difficult first years. Again, Hanna persevered. Everyone said that people only wanted to stay near (Jump to top of next column) |

the beach. No one had a mountain B&B, but I knew people would love it here. She only took bookings for the weekends at first and worked her other business during the week. She acknowledges, "I couldn't have done it without them!"
Five years ago, Hanna's parents passed away. This marked a time of change for Hanna. "I realized how quickly our lives can end so I decided to quit housekeeping and concentrate on my Bed & Breakfast." Hanna is a member of the B&B Association of Santa Cruz County and has served as president for 4 years. The group works on marketing and helping each other. One example is that each member takes the phones for a week and then refers guests to the B&B that best fits their needs. Soon there will be a web site - www.bnbinns-santacruzca.org. For now, you can visit Hanna at her web site www.feltoncrestinn.com. "For a child who could not learn English, I have come a long way. I am now a successful business woman. I believe that what goes around comes around" states Hanna. In that spirit, Hanna is hosting a German exchange student next year. This is her chance to repay the boy's grandparents who helped her family after WWII with food and clothing. "Everyday is like Thanksgiving. I get to set the table and treat my guests." Hanna does like to spoil people. Every room comes with a bottle of champagne, a bowl of fresh fruit, a cheese tray, chocolate kisses, fresh flowers and a nice breakfast in the morning. It is a place to rejuvenate. A chance to walk in the woods, see the stars and inhale the great mountain air. Within five miles of the Inn there are hiking trails, Roaring Camp Railroad, antique stores and wonderful wineries. Felton also has a great selection of restaurants to try. So escape from the kids, send back the airline ticket and vacation in a little slice of local paradise. |

Guest Testimonials
We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to you for letting us stay in your beautiful home. We feel very privileged to partake in your hospitality. A very relaxing and down to earth visit. We miss the peace and quiet of the woods. Our stay here made our 6th anniversary something to always remember. We definitely will be back and will certainly tell all our friends about your Inn and all the special caring touches you do so well.

We had intended to stay at a B&B at the beach, but they were all full. One of them suggested we call you! Lucky us!! We hadn't planned on such an extravagance, but boy oh boy was it worth it. The bed! The fireplace! The views! The tub! The décor! The snacks... Yes!

What a beautiful place you have here. So serene and you are such a gracious hostess. Thanks so much for the restaurant recommendation. It was a wonderful place to eat and we would not have known about it otherwise. Our 38th anniversary has been a special time and we will always remember it fondly. By God's grace we hope to return to the Tree Top Penthouse. The only negative in our stay is that it has been too short.

This has been delightful. Your graciousness and hospitality were very much appreciated. Your home is lovely and the personal touches add so much. We have stayed in a number of B&Bs. Yours will truly be memorable. Thanks so much!

We loved our stay here. You have all of my favorite things here; plants, flowers, candles, colored glass, stained glass, so beautiful! You are a sweet lady and it's been a great pleasure to meet you and be treated with such nice hospitality. Thank you very much.

Our night in an enchanted forest! My recommendation to all future visitors of the tree Top Penthouse - light all the candles - pop the champagne - sit on the bear rug and enjoy reading everybody's stories. Then... create your own fairy tale. Ours was to create our 2nd child!! We enjoyed every inch of the room for that. The rug. The bed. The tub. Hopefully in 9 months we will call Hanna with wonderful news. The breakfast was superb and the patio relaxing. I'm looking forward to our next visit at Felton Crest. Thanks for making our 9th anniversary one of our best.

What a wonderfully unexpected pleasure it was to find this beautiful home in the woods to spend the night in. Our thanks to Dieter for recommending you. He did not underestimate the charm and beauty of your comfortable and wholly welcoming home among the redwoods. This was a perfect night away from the city. Thank you for everything!

Your place is so beautiful! The beautiful trees, and lovely garden! When we walked into this room I was so surprised with all the nice touches you did. The fruit, cider for the kids & champagne, the flowers, the candles, the beautiful bed & lace covers! I was in awe. The wonderful hikes in the morning with Sheba and Duke help start my day. Thank you for letting me bring my family! I wanted us to get away and this was the PERFECT place! Hanna, I have a fear of dogs from an earlier childhood experience, but Sheba is so kind, such a wonderful dog. Hanna, I cannot thank you enough for what you've done for us and the wonderful memories you helped us create! You are a very special person Hanna and you touch so many lives and hearts. Thank you is such a small word to tell you for all you've done. May God bless you always!

Thank you so much for the wonderful memory. Stopping to rest on my way home to San Diego was very nice. I always look for the special experience when I travel, and I found it here in your home. Thank you for this wonderful experience. I also enjoyed the breakfast and conversation. You are a very special person.

As we lay in bed together reflecting on our awesome experience and reading about the joy this room has brought to others, a warm glow comes over us. The warmth of lace and crisp white sheets. The warmth of flowers and plants everywhere. The smell of peppermint freshly picked. The sound of quiet and peace within. The soft touches and rustic fireplace. The cozy hammocks and sheep skin rug. The playful companions and friendly neighbors. Your warm smile and easy going nature. The glow will remain for a long time as I hope Felton Crest will too. Keep bringing your warm smile to your guests and your guests will keep bringing themselves back to your warm glowing home.

Serenity... that's the gift you've blessed us with. Peace, tranquility, gracious host, friendly pets, beautiful surroundings, ease, entertainment, lovely deck & heavenly hammocks. Thanks so very much, and to those who gave us the gift certificate, for a pause in our hectic lives. Now we have to go back. Oh well. At least we felt pampered for a little while. We hope to be back, Who knows. Just a stone's throw, but a whole lifestyle away!
